Transport operators and drivers associations in the province and city of Iloilo and motor banca operators plying Iloilo-Guimaras route received advocacy materials/signages and participated in a short tourism awareness meeting conducted by the Department of Tourism Region VI recently. The said advocacy materials include “No Smoking, “Barya Lang Po sa Umaga” and “Priority Seats for Pregnant Women, Persons with Disability and Senior Citizens” signs. This project aims to create/strengthen mindfulness in society and care for other human beings.
DOT Region VI Director Atty. Helen J. Catalbas said transport operators and drivers play significant roles in the promotion of tourism. She said taxi and jeepney drivers and motor banca crew are among the first people who deal with tourists as they arrive in Western Visayas.
“Taxi, jeepneys and motor bancas are the typical mode of transportation in Western Visayas. Seeing advocacy materials like these on public vehicles and motor bancas will inform the local residents and foreign visitors of the ordinances and laws in the area. We also include a short tourism awareness meeting to equip our drivers with information that they may be able to share to visitors such as points of interest, where to eat and what to do around their respective area”, Director Catalbas explained.
Director Catalbas gladly accepted insights and firsthand suggestions coming from the drivers as some of this information may help the agency and the local government units to take actions on areas that need improvement.
“This is one of DOT VI’s initiatives in creating a new network through the promotional campaign ‘Experience Western Visayas First’. We will also reach out to transport operators and drivers of Capiz, Guimaras, Aklan and Antique to make sure that every driver and operator in the region is a tourism promoter”, Director Catalbas emphasized.
