The Department of Tourism Region VI in coordination with Iloilo City Tourism Office began site inspection of the public markets for inclusion in the Western Visayas’ newest tourism product-DOT Market Day. DOT Market day aims to highlight and include public markets in tours given by tour operators.
Jaro Big Market and Lapaz Public Market were the first to be evaluated according to tourist appeal, accessibility and activities, products, facilities and services. DOT Region VI Director Atty. Helen J. Catalbas said site inspection in the area will help DOT VI, local government unit and market administrator assess the preparedness of the market for the launching on November 2016.
“We have set standards to identify if the area is feasible and spot the areas for improvement. Market day is part of Ilonggo’s daily routine and timeless culture and is a valuable addition to the tourism attraction in the area for a better experience”, Director Catalbas declared.
Director Catalbas added the province and city of Iloilo and the province of Guimaras are the pilot areas for the new tourism product but will spread to other provinces in the future.
“All of these products are part of the ongoing DOT VI promotional campaign ‘Experience Western Visayas First’ and will not be limited to certain provinces. Each province in Western Visayas has its unique product to promote and DOT VI will coordinate with the local government units to make sure that the products are organized before massive promotion”, Director Catalbas emphasized.
